Becoming an African Aunty 101

There comes a point in every African girl’s life when she realizes she is becoming an African aunty. We are not talking strictly about maternal or paternal aunts, because in Africa, the title “Aunty” extends far beyond blood ties. She might be a relative, a family friend, a neighbor, your mother’s colleague, or simply the woman who always seems to know what you’ve been up to.

Being an African aunty isn’t about being old. It’s about becoming someone people can look up to and rely on.

The African Aunty position comes with a certain level of responsibility and authority because Africans believe raising a child is a communal job. That’s why the proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” has endured for generations.

The African Aunty is more than the woman we joke about online. Her role is shaped by presence, observation, confidence, and care.

She is often one of the people who keep the family connected, checking in on everyone, noticing when something is wrong, and stepping in when she is needed.

An African aunty can be many things at once.

She can be nosy, but she is rarely indifferent.

She can be blunt, but she is often paying attention.

She can embarrass you in front of everyone and defend you just as fiercely when it matters.

She asks questions you would rather avoid and somehow always knows when you need advice, whether you asked for it or not.

This is how an African aunty’s care shows up; it may not always look like tenderness, but it is care all the same, and perhaps that is the contradiction that makes an African aunty so memorable.

Signs You’re Entering Your Aunty Era

  • You’ve started asking “too many” questions, and you no longer apologize for it.
  • You carry snacks, tissues, or safety pins in your bag “just in case.”
  • You give unsolicited advice freely, without prompting.
  • You’ve developed an inexplicable interest in everybody’s relationship status.
If any of this sounds familiar, don’t panic. You may simply be entering your African Aunty era.
